ECO4 — Energy Company Obligation
Up to £10,000+ fully funded
Ends Dec 2026Means Tested

The UK's largest domestic energy efficiency programme. Funds free insulation, boiler replacements, and heat pump upgrades for eligible low-income households. The scheme runs until 31 December 2026 but most funding has been allocated — apply now rather than waiting.

What's covered
Loft insulation, cavity wall insulation, solid wall insulation, first-time central heating, heat pumps
Who delivers it
Large energy suppliers (obligated by Ofgem). Apply through your supplier or a registered installer.
EPC requirement
Your home must be rated D, E, F or G. Higher-rated homes generally do not qualify.
Income threshold
On qualifying benefits, OR household income under £31,000-£38,000 (LA Flex, varies by council)
You may qualify if:
  • You receive Universal Credit, Pension Credit, Income Support, JSA, ESA, Housing Benefit, Child Tax Credit or Working Tax Credit

Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS)
£7,500 off a heat pump
Open — funded to 2028All homeowners

Available to ALL homeowners in England and Wales — no means testing. Provides £7,500 towards the cost of replacing a gas, oil, LPG or electric heating system with an air or ground source heat pump. Also £5,000 for biomass boilers in rural areas.

Grant amount
£7,500 for air or ground source heat pumps. £5,000 for biomass boilers (rural areas only).
Who is eligible
Any homeowner in England or Wales. No income limit. No benefit requirement.
How it works
Your MCS-certified installer applies on your behalf. The grant is deducted from your invoice — you never see the money.
Important note
Your home should be well insulated before installing a heat pump. A heat pump in a poorly insulated home is much less efficient.
You may qualify if:
  • You own your home in England or Wales
  • You are replacing an existing fossil fuel heating system
  • You use an MCS-certified installer
You will not qualify if:
  • You are a renter
  • You are in Scotland (use Home Energy Scotland instead)

Solar Together / Switch Together
30-40% cheaper than individual installation
Council-endorsed group buyingAll homeowners

Not a grant, but a council-endorsed group buying scheme. Households in participating council areas register together and solar providers bid for the group installation. The bulk-buying effect results in 30-40% lower costs than individual quotes. Pre-vetted installers, competitive pricing, backed by your local council.

How much cheaper
Typically 30-40% below the average individual installation quote. Exact saving depends on your council area and the number of households in the group.
Who can use it
Homeowners and tenants (with landlord permission) in participating council areas. Check if your council runs it.
How it works
Register your interest with your council. Solar installers bid to install for your group. You get a competitive quote and can accept or decline.
Availability
Not UK-wide. Available in specific council areas. Search "Solar Together [your council]" to check availability.
Works well for:
  • Homeowners who want solar but cannot access free grant schemes
  • Anyone who wants a trusted, pre-vetted installer at a competitive price
  • Areas where Solar Together or Switch Together is active
